Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
"Heine endows this tale with a childlike exuberance as he embraces a busy day bursting with the most unlikely happenings," said PW of the madcap antics of Charlie Rooster, Fat Percy and Johnny Mouse, who first appeared in Friends. Ages 4-8. (May)
Children's Literature - Alexandria LaFaye
Charlie Rooster, Fat Percy the pig, and Johnny Mouse leave the day-to-day doldrums of their farm to have great adventures. In this fantastic tale, they rescue the goose princess and her sisters from a fox and help a mother cow retrieve her child from a mountain top. The friends find a treasure map and evade pirates. Chased by a cannibal cook, they race across an island and finally find an elephant who agrees to take them home where they tell all their farm friends about their great adventures. With wild leaps of fancy, this book inspires the imagination and delights the eye with bright watercolor paintings.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-Charlie Rooster, Fat Percy, and Johnny Mouse return in this sequel to Friends (McElderry, 1982). Tired of the monotonous routine on the farm, they "...set out in search of adventure in the great, wide world." They rescue a goose princess and her sisters from a fox; encounter a band of pirates and a trained shark in the Red Sea; and meet up with a cannibal (a chef wielding a carving knife). By the end of the day, hungry and tired, they ride home on an elephant's back and then regale all the stay-at-homes with tales of their adventures. Heine uses a conversational storyteller's voice and keeps the plot moving at a brisk pace. Kids will love the outrageous details, and parents will appreciate some of the sly bits he throws in. His artwork has gotten a bit sketchier and more impressionistic over the years. And his watercolors are great: colorful, lively, and intrinsically funny. Like James Stevenson, he does a lot with a little: complex bits of character and emotion are conveyed with just a few brushstrokes. A worthy successor to the first book and a "must-have" for most libraries.Lauralyn Persson, Wilmette Public Library, IL
