Overview

Ray Charles was cutting decent-to-competent light country material in Nashville during the mid-'80s. His still-gripping voice and masterful timing and delivery kept things from getting too disturbing, but these songs were a far cry from either his magnificent soul/R&B or his groundbreaking early-'60s country. They were mostly polite, sedate, occasionally humorous duets with such country stars as George Jones, Mickey Gilley, Merle Haggard, Janie Fricke, and Hank Williams, Jr..

Ray Charles has been tough to classify. Is he blues, country, jazz? In his "Georgia on my Mind" years, he was classified as country, though with hesitation, because of his race. But this album shows his true country side, though one should not attempt to classify Ray Charles. The music is, in true Ray Charles form, perfection. And the banter Ray Charles and his comrades offer in the music gives the implication that Ray was having a jam session instead of a meticulously prepared work. This album was one of my first exposures to Ray Charles, and it continues to be one of my favorites. I challenge anyone to find Ray Charles any better! Even the last of Ray Charles' albums, Genius, pales in comparison.

Another rehash of an album released 20 years ago...The original album still stands on it's original merits.
