Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Suzanna E. Henshon
Have you ever wished for a friend? Farley moves into a new neighborhood and cannot wait to make friends. When he tries to meet the other animals, they are too busy. Feeling lonely, the dog falls asleep and meets a beautiful angel who feeds him pancakes and plays with him. When he awakes, the angel has disappeared without a trace. When Farley tells his new friends about the angel, they do not believe him. He was dreaming, wasn't he? The dog paints his angel on a canvas—and suddenly she returns to life. She enchants Farley and his neighbors who dream of their own angel that night. In this lovely story, young readers will discover the powers of their own imagination. Unfortunately, there is a grammatical error in the text that keeps this book from being a classic. At one point, the author writes, "And wow, the sound they made was lovely, so lovely that Farley felt his angel were singing along with them." Besides this error, Elisa Kleven has once again touched magic in this picture book. Reviewer: Suzanna E. Henshon, Ph.D.

PreS-Gr 2—Farley hopes to make friends in his new neighborhood, but his neighbors—a pig, a bird, and a bear— seem to be too busy for him. One night he dreams that an angel is hovering over his bed. She feeds the lonely pup pancakes and plays and dances with him. After he wakes up, he tries to lure her back by making pancakes for her, but when she doesn't show up, he shares them with the other animals. As he tells them what he did with his angel, they all begin to play together and become friends. Farley paints a picture of her so they can see how special she is, and after she reappears in all her splendor, the animals imagine their own angels in their dreams that night. Kleven has created another story revealing the power of imagination. Children will enjoy the fantastical happenings. The mixed-media artwork is elaborate but does not compare to Kleven's art for The Paper Princess (Dutton, 1994) or Abuela (Dutton, 1991), which are brimming with details for readers to explore. An additional purchase.—Diane Antezzo, Ridgefield Library, CT
Kirkus Reviews

Dreams of angels help the new dog in the neighborhood make friends.

Amiable Farley, the new dog, wants to meet a new friend, but pig, bear and bird are all too busy. Farley decides to work on painting and gardening but this only satisfies for a while—he is "still lonely." When night falls, Farley climbs into bed with a mournful, "I wish I had a friend." In an obvious dream, a "sparkly, swirly, and bright as a star" angel appears. Farley and the angel share pancakes, play, sing and dance together. But morning comes, and the angel disappears. When Farley goes outside to find his angel, the other animals learn about the dream and try to help bring her back. Somewhat predictably, they end up sharing pancakes, playing ball, dancing and singing. And so the friendship-building process begins. Kleven's collage illustrations in a cheery, mostly pastel palette capture Farley's range of emotions and the spirited actions of all the creatures in this gentle tale. Most dramatic is a nighttime scene that shows the starry sky full of the dreamed angels of each of the new friends.

Although it may not be eventful enough for the masses, this quiet story could be just right for a preschooler who is about to begin school, has just moved or is shy about meeting new peers. (Picture book. 3-6)
