Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Finally readers have a book that takes a serious and critical look at the horror genre for children. The authors discuss horror from a number of interesting perspectives including the trend of turning horror into a commodity to be plumbed, with the inevitable reference to R. L. Stine's work; and the apparent fascination that adolescents have for themes of fear, loss of control, and death as seen in the works of Stine, Cusick, Cooney, and Bates written under the Point Horror imprint. It is nice to have some scholarship around horror for children and teens, a genre that should have been taken seriously long ago. Through the authors' close study of a number of titles, there are some fascinating insights to be gained about the nature and challenges of growing up. A thoughtful discussion of David Almond's work is particularly compelling. A thorough index, bibliographies of each cited author's works, and Web sites of interest are included. For those who often have wondered how to explain the appeal of horror to parents of teens, or even how to explain it to themselves, this book is a must-read. That said, this book most likely will find its audience in college libraries and large public libraries. Index. Biblio. Source Notes. Further Reading. 2001, Continuum, 134p, $89.95, $29.95 pb. Ages Adult. Reviewer: Alison Kastner SOURCE: VOYA, February 2002 (Vol. 24, No.6)
