Frikyiwa Collection, Vol. 2

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Kurt B. Reighley
The second volume of French producer Frédéric Galliano's Frikyiwa project -- originally released as part of a set of import-only 12-inch singles on Laurent Garnier's F Communications label -- invites an array of DJ/producers to reinterpret works by great West African artists. German minimalist Pole reduces Lobi Traoré's "Sayo" into hazy dub reggae, while London's Catalyst teases "Yankaw" by Malian singer Nahawa Doumbia into an eight-minute, sax-inflected workout reminiscent of Fela Kuti, building ever so slowly to an explosive climax. Vibrant percussive sounds leap out of tracks like Ibrahim Hamma Dicko's "Sida," remixed by DJ Spider, and Galliano's take on "Noumou ...

Vibrant percussive sounds leap out of tracks like Ibrahim Hamma Dicko's "Sida," remixed by DJ Spider, and Galliano's take on "Noumou Foly" by Neba Solo, rippling with the mellifluous, marimba-like timbre of the balafon. By curtailing the house/techno/hip-hop rhythmic conventions more evident on Vol. 1, instead using the beats and patterns of the originals as the point of departure, this eight-track outing acquits itself even better than the acclaimed first installment.
All Music Guide - Stacia Proefrock
This is the second volume from Six Degrees Records to feature the musicians of Mali remixed by some of the Western world's most prominent DJs. Engineered by French producer Frederic Galliano, who started the project to provide a club audience for African music. The result of the meeting of the two worlds is stunning. DJ Spider returns to make a strong appearance on this volume and the African artists whose work is sampled include Ibrahim Hamma Dicko and Nahawa Doumbia.
