Overview

In 1957, Harper published its first I Can Read title, Little Bear, written by Else Holmelund Minarik and illustrated by Maurice Sendak. Large type, simple vocabulary, chapter-like divisions, and decorative pictures made Little Bear perfect for emerging readers—they could read the story comfortably and not feel overwhelmed by the text. Following suit came such classics as Peggy Parish's Amelia Bedelia series, Lillian Hoban's books about Arthur the monkey, and Syd Hoff's popular Danny and the Dinosaur. Many books in this series are special in the depth of emotion evoked - Little Bear, the Frog and Toad books by Arnold Lobel, and Daniel’s Duck by Clyde Bulla, to name a few - and all are enjoyed by children of all ages. Grade 1 - Grade 3.

A must have for my first grader. The one Frog and Toad we didn't have. A great gift for any family. Short stories make ideal bedtime stories.

Frog and Toad is a great series for all kids. My little girl loves to hear and read the stories in these books. My daughter is learning what being a true friend is all about from reading these books. I field question after question about why Frog and Toad do everything together or for each other. This series is very well illustrated and written. I especially love some of the humor that is cleverly written into the stories. We laugh a lot while reading this series.

My son loves reading the stories of Frog and Toad. The two characters are wonderful friends, and the stories as gentle and funny and real. My son started reading them in first grade, and we've been collecting the books ever since.
