Overview

A Texas Lone Star Reading List Book

"A Book Sense 76 Children's Pick

After reluctantly kissing a frog, an awkward, fourteen-year-old princess suddenly finds herself a frog, too, and sets off with the prince to seek the means--and the self-confidence--to become human again.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
"This debut novel follows the adventures of a 14-year-old princess and the talking frog she meets one day in a swamp," said PW. "The tale offers peppy dialogue and some comical scenes." Ages 8-up. (Oct.) Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
From The Critics
Uninterested in marrying Prince Jorge, Princess Emeralda (Emma) escapes to a nearby swamp and encounters Eadric, a prince-turned-frog. Emeralda kisses him to reverse the spell; however, the kiss backfires and Emeralda becomes a green-skinned frog. Emma and Eadric take a harrowing journey to break the spell. They are kidnapped by an incompetent, evil witch named Vannabe, but rescued by Li'l, the bat. Li'l and Fang, their new snake friend, escort them to Emeralda's castle, where Emeralda's Aunt Grassina aides them in recovering Emeralda's lost bracelet, a key in breaking the spell. Baker has added a twist to a popular Grimms tale; however, the story begins slow and characters are colorless. The plot could be tighter—Emma and Eadric's encounter with a nymph seems insignificant. Nonetheless, the story features crisp dialogue and is peppered with comedy. While the happy-ever-after ending is predictable, Emma and Eadric become friends, not lovers. The story will appeal primarily to young girls. 2002, Bloomsbury, 200 pp., Cole

    A Must Read Book!

This book is a twisted up love story. You will learn how tricky magic is and how icky swamps are. Wishes aren¿t the best when one day you are treated like royalty and the next you are eating flies. This book is filled with clever witches but you will learn some witches have an evil side to them.
In this story there is a princess Emerelda that meets a clever frog. ¿I will never kiss you.¿ Emerelda repeats over and over in this story. Don¿t let her bubbly personality fool you though. Her aunt is a witch so they fool around with a lot of magic. She just might have a few tricks up her sleeves. The frog always comes along when something bad is coming near.
The characters in this story are Emerelda, Eadric, Aunt, Lil stinker, and the snake. They travel from swamp to castle and then to the witches¿ house so you will never know how far you can go with these folks. This story is very hopping and romantic. Some parts of the book you will not want to put the book down or even blink. It was one of my favorite books I have ever read and enjoyed.
I think this story is very interesting and a good funny romance. When Emerelda gets her surprise the story gets very amusing. With the big change she gets it is hilarious hearing all her complaints and whining. All I have to say is this book is very well written.
Emerelda and Eadric fall in love on their long adventure. Their argues are entertaining and hilarious. This story teaches some really good lessons so pay attention to the story but I know it will keep you hooked in. Overall, I think this is more of a girl type book and any girl that will read it would love it.

    I liked it!

I actually really liked this book! I thought the story was very sweet, and it left me with a nice feeling afterward. The idea of a frog princess was great! I can always appreciate books for young readers, they have some of the best! I am 20, and I thought this was a very refreshing story because of the innocence of the characters.

    Really Enjoyable

I really enjoyed reading this book. The story is cute, and the characters are maybe a little traditional, but still fresh. I only gave it 4 stars because while some sentences and paragraphs gave me goosebumps, others were predicable and slightly unimaginative. Despite that, I think this book has enough good qualities to cover any of the minor flaws it may possess.

As a side note, the two chapters were a little slow and difficult to get past. But, once you get through them, the rest make you forget you are reading a book.

I feel that this book is suitable for a person of any age. I enjoyed it at 21. I feel that it is appropriate for children, young adults, and adult readers.
