Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This is Froggy's first Christmas as well as his best Christmas, since he usually hibernates through the season. This year his friend Max wakes him up so he will have a chance to enjoy the holiday. Froggy and his friends find a Christmas tree (it helps that Max is a beaver who can cut the tree down). They decorate it and prepare presents. They learn that Christmas is best when shared with friends and family. The colorful pencil and watercolor illustrations are full of expression. Froggy appears in many other books, so his fans will welcome this entry in the series, while readers meeting the character for the first time may be enticed into exploring the rest of the books. 2000, Viking/Penguin, $15.99. Ages 3 to 6. Reviewer: Dr. Judy Rowen
Kirkus Reviews
The irrepressible Froggy's best Christmas is also his first, as he usually hibernates through it. Once his friend Max the beaver wakes him up, though, he quickly gets into the holiday spirit, dressing in jig time ("Zip! Zut zut zut! Zup! Znap! Zat! Zwit! Zum!"), hieing off with other newly awakened friends to drag home a tree, decorate it, sing carols, throw snowballs, exchange gifts and sentiments (" ‘Christmas is about friends . . . and family, too.' " "It's the spirit of giving that counts," etc.), and chow down. Remkiewicz's festive cartoon illustrations are replete with open-mouthed grins. A cameo from "Santa Owl" is the only surprise here, but as Froggy continues to hop through the holidays, he has plenty of fans hopping along behind. (Picture book. 5-7)

    Good Children's Book

PLOT Because Froggy usually sleeps through it, Froggy has never celebrated Christmas. This year however, something new happens. Max the beaver wakes Froggy up to celebrate Christmas. It doesn't take long until Froggy's finding a tree, wrapping presents, singing carols, and enjoying a holiday feast. Additional Features This is a fun children¿s book with good dialogue. This book celebrates a Christian holiday so I don't know how much it would cross over into other cultures. The illustrations were ok at best. The main characters were dressed in their winter jackets and earmuffs while the parents were still in their bathrobes tell me that there wasn't a lot review before it was published. Fairly durable construction should provide the reader with many readings. Reaction This was a good book and I have to admit that I enjoyed reading it. The pages are large and will provide a good backdrop for group readings where children can sit in a circle. I think that would be well received by children.
