Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Frogs and toads are amphibians that begin their life in water and as adults, live on land. However, they are different from other amphibians because they do not have tails. A person usually can't tell the difference between frogs and toads just by looking at them, but scientists can tell by looking at the way the bones are arranged. The book opens with facts and pictures of frogs and then puts them in their appropriate place in the animal kingdom. The charts and description present the order of living things in an understandable manner. A selection of shorebirds from the Americas and other parts of the world are featured. The excellent pictures will let readers compare and contrast the species and marvel at these fascinating creatures--from the tiny, but noisy spring peepers to the burrowing tree frogs found in the deserts of southern Australia. The book includes a though-provoking section that addresses the reason these amphibians are dying out. There is a "Words to Know" list, a page of resources that includes books, videos and web sites, and an index. Another good choice for report writers and curious young minds. 2000, Watts,
