But that figure—sobering as it is—is deceptive, given that only a fraction of those jobs are career-worthy.

So how do you succeed in a marketplace that’s stacked against you? According to professional career counselors D. A. Hayden and Michael Wilder, you’ve got to approach the hunt for employment as if it were a marketing campaign. In other words, you’ve got to make yourself a brand—by creating a clear “story” for yourself, understanding your target audience, and developing an effective communications plan to deliver your message.

You’ve also got to avoid the pitfalls. Hayden and Wilder identify four personality traits that can doom first-time job seekers to failure. Then, through a trademark method they call Candidate Illumination, the authors prescribe cures for those “pathologies” and present savvy strategies for every step of the job-search process—from finding your focus, to composing a winning resume, to acing the interview. D. A. Hayden and Michael Wilder are the founders of Hayden-Wilder, a career-counseling firm based in Boston. They specialize in recent college graduates seeking entry-level positions.  Their career program has been featured in the New York Times, Newsweek, Time, Fortune, the Boston Globe, and on NPR. Between them, they have coached more than 3,000 candidates. Both have extensive experience in brand marketing. They live in Boston.

I am one semester away from my college graduation and have been panicking about my upcoming job search. In a very innovative and encouraging manner, this book made me feel very confident about identifying my skills and in what manner to portray those skills to a prospective/future employer. Books on job-hunting and résumé-writing abound, but From B.A. to Payday: Launching Your Career After College specifically targets new or soon-to-be college graduates. Authors D.A. Hayden & Michael Wilder have impressive credentials and work histories in marketing and joined forces to form Hayden-Wilder, a firm that helps first-time employment applicants develop a branding message for the job market.

Their book is well-organized and infused with humor. Hayden and Wilder help readers use their experiences from past summer jobs or volunteer positions, no matter how menial the work, to highlight important skills that demonstrate why they will be an asset to any company.

The most valuable chapters are on networking and interviewing. The authors present a way to set up a networking database that won¿t overwhelm the jobseeker. Hayden and Wilder also advise jobseekers to Google their interviewers before their appointments to gather as much information as possible about the person they¿ll be meeting; this information can be used to subtly weave flattering comments into the conversation. However, Hayden and Wilder fail to remind readers to be sure they are collecting information on the right ¿Mary Smith,¿ for example. How embarrassing to tell your interviewer you were impressed with her outreach work with Sudanese orphans, only to have her tell you she has never worked with children!

No content on interviewing would be complete without advice on how to dress for an interview, and Hayden and Wilder provide that too. Interestingly, while the authors feel it¿s important to tell readers not to wear jeans to an interview, their instructions on what to include on a résumé leave something to be desired. In fact, the section on résumés is where the authors lose some credibility. For example, Hayden and Wilder include activities and interests on clients¿ résumés, but including personal information goes against the recommendations of most résumé experts. Even more troubling, the authors include rock climbing as an activity on the résumé of an outstanding job candidate, but most managers and human resource professionals would view an employee¿s rock climbing as an activity that could potentially cost the company more in medical insurance claims and premiums. Thus, an applicant with that interest on his/her résumé would likely be excluded from the interviewing process.

Another résumé section that can doom an applicant but that Hayden-Wilder use with their clients is the objective statement. Most professional résumé preparers, including Martin Weitzman of Gilbert Résumés in NY, recommend replacing the objective with a summary of qualifications. Weitzman says the summary ¿¿is your sales pitch. Use it to establish your value by telling people why you're ready for this job and what you bring to the table.¿

Hayden-Wilder résumés also list clients¿ education in chronologic order rather than reverse chronologic order, the more accepted format.

Despite the shortcomings of the chapter on résumés, there is still valuable information in this book. More than anything, it will give readers confidence as they prepare for a job search.

From B.A. to Payday is a must-have read for college students, recent grads and even parents. It is a guide to just about every aspect of the job hunting process. The authors truly understand the hurtles faced by young adults...from over-protective "helicopter" parents to career services traps. Their advice is not only based on their opinions and experiences as successful professionals, but also on research gathered from colleges and students. Student case studies present hard examples on each topic, helping to illustrate the chapter themes.

The book is organized in an easy-to-read manner, which I was thankful for as a person who works many hours and has little free time. Many chapters conclude with outlines of the sections' most important points. Readers are able to flip through these pages for quick refreshers on any topic they need information or tips on.

As a recent college grad, I appreciated this book's honesty and practicality. I had previously been flooded with many mixed messages on how to conduct a productive job search. From B.A. to Payday allowed me to break through the myths and find a successful strategy that worked for me. With this book, graduates will definitely be on the right path to obtaining their first job!
