I read a lot and most of what I read has to do with how to develop effective managers and leaders in an organizational context. Eikenberry and Harris both have impressive credentials to be writing in this area and they have produced a well-organized and thorough treatment of the basics of how to be a leader. Those who know this field will find many familar names and concepts, along with some that are maybe not that well-known, all of which are essential for the emerging leader's tool kit. Those who are just becoming familar with leadership will get a "crash course" in some of the most important foundational ideas about how people behave and how to influence them. Short on theoretical discussions, with just enough to help you understand the basic ideas behind concepts, this book concentrates on using the information - I like this a lot. This book is research-based, clearly written, and organized in bite-size "chunks" that facilitate adult learning. When you buy the book, you also get access to a whole "slew" of additional information, making this one very nice value for the price. I mentioned I read a lot of books, but I only recommend a few. This is one of those few and, if I had to choose one title for someone new to leadership or someone who helps others become leaders, I would choose "From Bud to Boss".
