Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
This book is an introductory science book for very young children. It tells the familiar story of a caterpillar and its metamorphosis in easy text with plenty of clear, helpful illustrations. At the end there are pictures of some common butterflies and a short list of places to visit butterflies.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1Although the drama of metamorphosis has been documented with greater detail in other titles, this presentation stands out because of its classroom setting. The process is seen through the children's eyes as they experience the excitement of observing the wiggly caterpillar, watch it molt, change into a chrysalis, endure the endless waiting, and stare in wonder as a Painted Lady butterfly emerges and dries its wings. The closing pages show the class at the window watching the insect pause on a flower before flying away to begin the life cycle once again. Pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations create a cheerful setting similar in style to those found in Miriam Cohen's books about classroom events. Close-ups show the stages of transformation as captions wend along plant leaves and stems reminiscent of a caterpillar crawling. A small collection of butterflies commonly found in most parts of the U.S. and a list of addresses of butterfly centers are appended. An inviting book that young children can relate to and one that teachers will find valuable to support nature-study projects.Diane Nunn, Richard E. Byrd Elementary School, Glen Rock, NJ

This series is a Home Schooler's dream come true!

We homeschool our 5 year old daughter and her friend and they love this series for our science section. They usually contain some sort of extra activity they can do independently and the pictures are really colorful and detailed. The writing is easy to understand for them and it really gets them interested in the topic. Many of the questions they had about the butterfly were answered within the book, which made it easier for me too!! Afterwards, we watched a video from National Geo Kids. The kids are now really excited about science and look forward to the next book. Thanks Harper Collins....you rock!!

Great to inspire and teach kids (under 7)

Ever since I read j.singh's The Butterfly to my kids they've been obsessed with caterpillars and butterflies and just about the entire insect kingdom. So, undoubtedly, I've been cajoled into buying pretty much every butterfly book on the market (i plan to bill Singh!). Now having read all these books I consider myself a sorta self-proclaimed authority whose mission is to save parents time and money. And so here are the winners according to me and my two wonderful children. The gold medal goes to GOOD NIGHT SWEET BUTTERFLIES (for the illustrations color and content); the silver medal to FROM BUTTERFLY TO CATERPILLAR (for content and pictures); and the bronze to WAITING FOR WINGS (for content). There are plenty of others but these are a good place to start. Hope I've been helpful.
