They were called entradas--armed marches undertaken by Spanish conquistadores into the unknown interior regions of the New World. One of the last of the great entradas was mounted by Francisco Vazquez de Coronado in search of the mythical Seven Cities of Cibola. For gold, god, and glory, in February 1540, Coronado led an army of 337 conquistadores and a handful of Franciscan missionaries into the hear of the American Southwest.
