Overview

Debbie Thurman brings an honest and fresh approach to the complex issues surrounding depression. Part personal narrative, part social commentary, part psycho-theological treatise, this book promises to take you on a journey from which you will emerge a wholly different person.

Thurman fought Major Depressive Disorder for more than 10 years before even receiving an accurate diagnosis. Five years of additional counseling and treatment helped her to begin emerging from her prison of despair. Ultimately, the author maintains, it was a spiritual healing that released her fully to the light.

Thurman writes with a journalist's eye and a teacher's heart about the soul issues at the core of depression. She doesn't discount medical science; in fact her research has been painstaking. The answers are simpler than we imagine, but the individual journey is a test of faith. Her premise: We hurt, God cares and prayer counts.

This book is built around a compelling story of a fall and a redemption. It deals frankly with post-recovery issues, a departure from most books on the subject of depression. The extensive notes and bibliography offer additional material for searching.

Timely and Proven Advice for the Depressed and Their Families

As someone who has lived with a spouse suffering from debilitating depression, I can say without equivocation that this book offers real advice that hits us where we live. I wish it had been there for me when I was trying to cope years ago. I have read other books, but none with the sensitivity and relatability of 'From Depression to Wholeness.' It validates all the pain, from guilt to isolation to despair unto death ¿ but the author goes even further to write about post-recovery issues, something few of us think about because we want out of the jungle so desperately. This isn't just one woman's, one family's isolated story. As Bettie Youngs wrote in the foreword, it is 'Everyman's, Everywoman's' story. Many people need this book
