"From Failure to Promise: An Uncommon Path to Professoriate" was an inspiring read about Dr. Cleamon Moorer's own path as an underachieving student dropout. Moorer draws on a series of his own failures and accomplishments as high school student dropout, to becoming a tenured track professor at Dominican University's Brennan School of Business (BSB). The chronology of events is easily followed. Dr. C. Moorer was able to use the unyielding inspiration of his parents and their own faith to stop his spiral as a failing student. He became in time, a dedicated student, a problem solving engineer, an effective teacher, a husband, parent and providing son. He was able to gravitate from failure to success by first believing in what he was taught about himself by his father and mother. Over time, he was able to grab hold of and hear the things that God had in store for him personally towards his scholastic, professional and personal challenges. That he was able to maneuver these challenges belies the uncommon path described in this book. Moore uses "Failure to Promise" to record the moment by moment consciousness that he operated in from one success to another, quoting scripture verses along the way. He learned that not every failure is a failure, but that failure can in fact lead to promise and opportunity. And any opportunity, with the right attitude can become a vehicle to unimaginable successes. In this journey, Dr. Moorer draws on the faith that he had to develop to find the realness of God in himself. He was carried by his father's strong faith in the beginning, but in time, Moorer became fully persuaded of his own faith in God. This coming to terms with God in one's life is important for any individual. "From Failure to Promise: An Uncommon Path to Professoriate" helps to inspire others to believe that God is very aware of every step of the way as we travel our own uncommon paths as we arrive at each new beginning.

Those who are struggling, who aren't sure what their path is in life, or those who know someone that needs some guidance, this book is for you! Young or old, it doesn't matter. Dr. Moorer's words are inspirational and reassuring, eloquent and honest. This book is a heartfelt journey that will help anyone understand their own path; to find the inspiration and faith to move forward, and know that God is always by our sides.

We've all wished for the day when our dreams came true. That dream is different for each person. For Cleamon Moorer, it was to become an engineer. Today, he enjoys the fulfillment of teaching as a professor, having had the experience of working in some wonderful positions and obtaining the education that helped make that dream come true. It took hard work, dedication, encouragement and God's guiding hand to put him on the path to where he is today.

Many of Dr. Moorer's experiences directly related to me. I found his enthusiasm contagious. A story such as his was what I needed to push me over the edge and to realize I can accomplish my dreams. If you think your trials are hard, remember that there is always someone worse off than you.

For anyone who went to college and didn't become a Rhodes Scholar this first time around, you would do well to pick up this book. The book is easy to digest and easy to read, without losing its intellectual gravitas. Most importantly, Dr. Moorer follows Elmore Leonard's rule for writing - when it sounds like writing...he rewrites it. Pick it up for yourself, or pick it up for a friend, neighbor, niece, nephew, etc. who may have had a rough semester (or if there anything like me, a rough 4 years) in college when it comes to their grades. It will lift their spirits, and let people know that tomorrow is a new day.

With his memoir From Failure to Promise: An Uncommon Path to Professoriate, Cleamon Moore recounts his unusual journey to finding his place in the world. Coming from a hardworking, Christian family in 1980s Detroit has the most influence on his life, but he also contends with what the world outside his home has to offer. Although intellectually gifted, Dr. Moore sometimes struggled with school but always took the time to carefully weigh opportunities presented to him. Through it all, he has always kept his faith in what God has stored for him to which he credits any success he has had. Although Dr. Moore's text is at times engaging and even enlightening, there are times when he seems to stray a bit off topic, usually the times when he inserts Bible verses and advice in his narrative. However, the story of his life manages to be at times compelling. Dr. Moore's book has the potential to be a great inspiration to young black males who could use a little guidance and structure in their lives. His work serves as an important lesson in not being afraid to succeed and doing all one can in order to achieve goals and dreams. TaKeshia Brooks AAMBC Reviews
