Overview

For the more than twenty-five million Americans who suffer from chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and other fatigue-related illnesses, there is only one bestselling guide-From Fatigued to Fantastic! Now, this new, completely updated third edition incorporates the latest advances in science and technology to help alleviate the baffling symptoms associated with severe fatigue and body pain.

Dr. Teitelbaum's unique treatment program tackles the root causes of chronic fatigue (CFS) and fibromyalgia (FMS) and progressively works to eliminate deficiencies and imbalances in the body. The integrated SHIN protocol-sleep, hormones, infections, and nutrition-addresses these four main areas of treatment. From Fatigued to Fantastic! will show you how to: Lay the foundation for energy with eight solid hours of sleep a night. Optimize levels of key hormones that are often deficient in those with CFS/FMS. Eliminate underlying infections that can cripple the body's immune response. Kick-start the body and the brain with the right nutrition and with necessary supplements.

As you go through the book, you'll fill out worksheets that will equip you with a treatment program fitted to your specific needs. Guidelines for diagnosis and care are clearly and concisely presented, along with supporting scientific studies and treatment recommendations that include the latest and best strategies for using prescription and over-the-counter medications, nutritional supplements, alternative therapies, and dietary and lifestyle modifications.

Dr. Teitelbaum's treatment program is based on the clinically proven results of his landmark study and on his more than thirty years of experience in working with patients. Inaddition to providing cutting-edge research, up-to-date scientific information, and practical advice, he offers the compassionate understanding of one who has himself battled and overcome these disorders.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
An unusually compassionate internist whose own medical education was interrupted by a bout of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia, Teitelbaum has made these disorders his specialty. He offers straight talk about severe chronic fatigue states (SCFS). Sufferers who have been unable to locate physicians knowledgeable about diagnosing and treating these disorders will find this a gold mine, as may many doctors who have been baffled by such patients. Teitelbaum argues that a mixture of causes (including bowel disorder, hormonal imbalance and allergies) usually underlie SCFS, each of which can trigger additional problems. His approach is to break the vicious cycle of overwhelming fatigue, infections, "brain fog," achiness, poor sleep, allergies, anxiety and depression by treating them all simultaneously. His recommendations encompass prescription and over-the-counter drugs, dietary modifications, vitamin and mineral supplements, acupuncture, massage, chiropractic, herbs, simple home remedies and psychotherapy. While the breadth of his approach may cause some raised eyebrows among more conservative practitioners, extensive notes and bibliography, among other appendices, will answer many of their questions. (Dec.)
From The Critics
Written in easy-to-understand language, this resource guide describes the disorders listed in the subtitle, their symptoms, how they originate, and how to eliminate them. Teitelbaum, a leading clinician and researcher on treatments for Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS) and fibromyalgia, lost a year of medical school to these illnesses. His list of possible causes includes nutritional problems, adrenal insufficiency, hypothyroidism, hormonal imbalances, yeast overgrowths, sleep disorders, and parasitic infections. Appendixes comprise half the book and probably provide the most valuable information. An extensive treatment protocol, a list of patient support groups, a list of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome specialists, and mail order sources for medications, supplements, and herbal remedies make this book an invaluable resource. Of the several recent books on this topic (Harris McIlwain and Debra Fulghum Bruce's The Fibromyalgia Handbook, LJ 11/1/96; Devin Starlaynyl and Mary Ellen Copeland's Fibromyalgia & Chronic Myofascial Pain Syndrome and Miryam Williamson's Fibromyalgia, both LJ 9/15/96), this gets the nod if you can purchase only one.-Janet Coggan, Univ. of Florida Libs., Gainesville

This book has changed my life for the better!

This book contains great information and it has lead me to finding a local doctor that specializes in treating people with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. I am a white femail, age 47. I've been suffering with both conditions as far back as I can remember. I am currently being treated (since March 2009) by a doctor that I was able to find through information contained within this book. I've even corresponded several times through emails with the aouthor of this book, Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum. My fibromyalgia & chronic fatigue symptoms have improved greatly since starting the recommended regime. I strongly recommend this book to anyone suffering from these conditions!

It provided me hope and direction and opened me up to the importance of the various avenues to choose from.

If you have FM/CFS this is a MUST READ

As a support group leader and fibro/CFS sufferer this is one of the few books I recommend. Dr T is the foremost authority in this field. I am better now since my diagnosis in 2002 due in huge part to following his recommended protocol. If you do as Dr Teitlebaum says, you WILL get better. In addition to books and research his line of products (of which he donates the proceeds to fibro research) have helped me regain so much of my life that was devestated by fibro. This is one doctor with his heart in the right place!

    Very, VERY Helpful

This book is written so that it's easy to understand what the Doctor is saying. It is also very insightful on how modern medicine very often overlooks people's complaints while, at the same time, ignoring the endless possibilities of alternative medicine and it's ability to help those same people. Anyone who has been "undiagnosed" should read this for, in the very least, peace of mind that it is NOT all in your head.

    From Fatigued to Fantastic

This book has to be one of the most helpful and informative in dealing with my condition. I feel it is a must for everyone even those that aren't suffering with this disorder. I have recommended it to many friends and family members. Mary
