Interviews & Essays

From First Kicks to First Steps
By Alan Greene, MD, FAAP

"Why didn't anyone tell me that before?!" is the refrain I hear from parents all over the world. I'm a pediatrician and father of four, on a quest to teach and inspire parents about their children. Back in 1995, even before Internet Explorer, I had started a website for the families in my practice in order to answer whatever questions came up between office visits. Because it was the first site on the web where people could connect with a physician, I quickly started getting visitors from all over the world. Most of the common challenges presented by childrearing have relatively simple solutions, but these solutions could be even better (and easier to implement) if parents only knew about key windows of opportunity that come before these challenges arise.

One common concern often voiced by parents of preschool children is: "My child doesn't like vegetables." In From First Kicks to First Steps, I teach parents how to help 4-year-olds love their veggies, but I also discuss some of the earlier windows of opportunity. For veggie-loving, the first one comes before the baby is even born. Babies in the womb taste what their moms eat! We now know that amniotic fluid is loaded with subtle flavors and babies have the extra-sensitive taste buds to savor them. In a fascinating study, researchers gave one group of pregnant women a glass of carrot juice four times a week for three consecutive weeks. Another group of women in the study drank water. Months later, after the babies had been born and had grown enough to have been eating cereal for four weeks, it was time to look for a difference between the groups. An observer who did not know which group each baby belonged to studied the babies as they ate cereal mixed with carrot juice. There was a dramatic difference. Those who had sampled carrot juice in the amniotic fluid readily accepted and enjoyed the carrot juice in the cereal. Those who had missed this earlier experience protested and made unhappy faces when they tasted the carrot flavor!

Pregnancy may be the easiest time to influence the trajectory of your child's later diet. Eat the foods now that you will want him to eat later. Avoid the junk foods that you don't want her developing a taste for. There are later windows of opportunity throughout the first year, before and after you introduce solid foods to your child.

Whether the issue is sleep or nutrition or exercise or intelligence or ear infections or growing close as a family, there are marvelous moments when your loving attention has even more impact. In From First Kicks to First Steps, I've gathered up these windows of opportunity, and woven them into a story. You will see how they all fit together. And you will gather the wisdom that parents around the world wish they had gathered when their children were still babies.

    Wonderful!

As a practicing pediatrician, both patients and friends frequently ask me for book recommendations. Until this book, I had to suggest two or three different titles to cover both pregnancy and the first year of life. Dr. Greene has written an authoritative reference that celebrates your developing baby in a comprehensive but easy-to-understand way, and it is now the sole book I recommend for parents-to-be!

    Great info and easy reading!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it was packed with so many facts I didn't know. I especially enjoyed the sections on eye color and blood type. This book was very well written and packed with information and personal experiences from the doctor, which made it much more interesting to read. I would recommend this book to any new mom...and I already have one child, just didn't realize I still had so much to learn.

A Must Read for all new Moms

I have just read First Kicks to First Steps and throughly enjoyed it. It is jam packed with useful information. I loved the way the Doctor wrote in down to earth language that everyone can understand but backed up all of his information with references. He must have put in hundreds of hours of research to get all the information in one book ! This is a must read for all pregnant or new Moms. It would make a great baby shower gift.
