Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Della A.Yannuzzi
This book follows the life cycle of a darkling beetle. A mealworm is the larval form of a darkling beetle. A female adult beetle lays her white oval eggs in barns or near grain. When the mealworms hatch in two or three weeks, they feed on the grain. The mealworm is actually an insect. Its shell protects the mealworm's inner parts. Six short front legs help the mealworm move. As the mealworm grows bigger, it sheds its outer skin in a process called molting. This molting happens many times until the mealworm develops into a beetle. At the last shedding the mealworm turns into a pupa and begins a metamorphosis stage. Big changes are going on in this stage. It forms legs, antennae and wings. In two weeks, the pupa breaks out of its shell as an adult beetle. Its color is white, but quickly changes to black. The life cycle begins again as the adult beetles mate. The female lays as many as 1,000 eggs. Darkling beetles live only about a year. Back material includes fun facts, glossary, books to read and Internet sites. Illustrations are full page and colorful. This is a good, easily understood science book for young readers. Reviewer: Della A.Yannuzzi
