Description: This readable and reliable book is a description of the process of deciding on and applying for residencies.
Purpose: The purpose is to walk the medical student through the process of selecting and applying for residencies. It is easy to read and the author meets his objectives.
Audience: It is written for the third and fourth year medical student. The author has the necessary credentials to write such a book.
Features: The book is comprehensive — the entire process is covered. The author presents the material in a down-to-earth manner, occasionally a bit too "folksy." Particularly good are the explanations of the NRMP and the couples match. The section on writing personal statements contains very useful examples. Some of the illustrations are not needed (i.e., page 314). There is an error on page 3; all pediatric fellowships under the American Board of Pediatrics are three years in length, not two.
Assessment: This is a useful addition to the existing body of knowledge and self-help literature.
