Purpose: The field of neuroscience has been one of the most progressive over the past few decades. The introduction of molecular biology allowed for the description of new classes of membrane proteins and, in particular, signal receptors in the nervous system. A review of this fascinating and rapid-paced field is necessary for anyone who studies the central nervous system.
Audience: Graduate and postgraduate students and neurologists/neurosurgeons interested in the field of neuroscience are the primary audiences for this book. The authors are credible authorities from recognized institutions in the U.S. and Europe and have all extensively published in the topics they write about.
Features: The 39 authors contribute 18 chapters. The book starts off by addressing the basic neuroscience, progressing to the molecular biology of each of the structures and behaviors described and finishing with a comprehensive description of behaviors and memory. At first glimpse, it seems just like any other book in neuroscience. However, each chapter is accompanied by mathematical models to reproduce the behaviors described. In addition, a CD with all the illustrations is included, which is a very helpful tool for graduate students, who frequently need to present their data in conferences and inside their departments. The book is affordable for graduate students which, in my view, is an important aspect to consider.
Assessment: Overall, this is an affordable good book for graduate, postgraduate, and professionals such as neurologists and neurosurgeons. It is a great buy for general and neuroscience libraries.

Meet the Author

The June and Virgil Waggoner Professor and Chair, Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy, University of Texas Medical School at Houston. Dr. Byrne is an internationally acclaimed Neuroscientist. He received his PhD under the direction of Noble Prize winner, Eric Kandel. Dr. Byrne is a prolific author and Editor-in-Chief of Learning and Memory (CSHP).

Professor, Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy, University of Texas Medical School at Houston. Dr. Heidelberger is an accomplished cellular neurophysiologist specializing in mechanisms of neurotransmitter release. She received her doctoral training under the guidance of Gary Matthews and her postdoctoral training under the direction of Nobel Laureate Erwin Neher. Dr. Heidelberger is a former president and executive board member of the Biophysical Society's Subgroup on Exocytosis and Endocytosis and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Neurophysiology. She has directed and taught graduate-level courses in cellular neurophysiology and membrane biophysics for more than a decade.

The William Wheless III Professor, Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy, University of Texas Medical School at Houston. Dr. Waxham’s multi-disciplinary laboratory focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of synaptic function and plasticity.
