Description: This hardbound monograph is a description of the recent thinking regarding the utilization of nutrition support in critical care. It is presented as Volume 34 of the Update in Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine series published by Springer.
Purpose: Optimization of nutritional management in the critically ill patient is the stated intent.
Audience: The senior trainee or practitioner is an appropriate audience for this volume. Editors and contributors include international authorities from the U.S. and Western Europe.
Features: Approximately 35 chapters and a detailed subject index are included in the 500 pages of this volume. The included topic list is broad, ranging from standard nutrition formulations to immunomodulation, antioxidant therapy, therapy of diarrhea, and various nutrition strategies with specific organ dysfunction. Chapters are concise and clearly written. No photographs are employed but black-and-white line drawings and tables reproduce well. An ample reference list is provided with each chapter with citations dating to within one to two years of publication. References represent original contributions. Chapters and authors are listed in the table of contents with no attempt to further organize the subject matter. A detailed subject index concludes this book.
Assessment: This book is a contribution which may be valuable to the practitioner of broadly based critical care. A wide breadth of nutrition topics are presented and discussed with much contemporary thinking. A drawback is overlap in many of the chapters, particularly with respect to perioperative issues. I do not consider this a significant drawback, as the reader will be allowed access to the varied art as well as science of nutrition support.
