Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Southern cook and hostess Emyl Jenkins loves to cook but hates the aggravation -- her eyes glaze over when she sees "take a double boiler"; mention "a sieve" and she turns the page. Her answer: doctoring up store-bought food to put homemade food on the table in 30 minutes or less.

If you're tired of ordering in or going out to chain restaurants for a quick meal, this collection of 200 easy recipes will make you a believer. There's a 2-Step Steak Soup, Lazy Boy Lasagna, and Eggnog Pancakes. There are plenty of Southern dishes like Vidalia Onion Casserole and Quick-Quick Brunswick Stew and many biscuit and grits dishes. For dessert? Try Brown Sugar Pie with pecans or Cake Mix Cookies. Want to throw a cocktail party or backyard barbecue? Jenkins serves up Date Cheese Balls for hors d'oeuvres and Coke-Cooked Hot Dogs for picnics or barbecues.

Jenkins relies on good convenience food like frozen diced and chopped onions, already grated cheese, precut meat and chicken, canned sauces, blended fruit juices, and various jellies and relishes. You'll appreciate her pantry list, menu suggestions, and the spirit that came up with Cake Mix Cookies. (Ginger Curwen)

Diane Mott Davidson
"Emyl Jenkins is as gifted a writer as she is a recipe-gatherer. Her dishes sound wonderful (especially the Sinful Butter Brickle Ice Cream Pie!). And you'll be glad you're saving time in the kitchen, so you can read more of Emyl's marvelous stories!"
author of The Goldy Bear Culinary Mystery Series
Jan Karon
"I haven't really cooked cooked in years. That's because I can make so many wonderful things by hardly cooking at all. A great favorite with my family is Simple Roast Chicken…It roasts while I write! See? That's not cooking, that's just a little fooling around in the kitchen."
—(From the Foreword), author of The Mitford Years
Nancy Olson
"Emyl Jenkins' books have long been among my customer's favorites. Her Southern Christmas was one of the top 10 best-selling books in my store the year it was published! Now with its charming anecdotes, easy cooking, and hints that even Heloise hasn't thought of, Emyl's From Storebought to Homemade will make your life richer--and easier!"
