From the Ashes by Adrien-Luc Sanders

Sociopath. Killer. Deviant. Monster, devoid of morals, incapable of human emotion. The villain known as Spark has been called that and more, and as a super-powered aberrant has masterminded countless crimes to build his father's inhuman empire. Yet to professor Sean Archer, this fearsome creature is only Tobias Rutherford--antisocial graduate researcher, quiet underachiever, and a fascinating puzzle Sean is determined to solve. One kiss leads to an entanglement that challenges everything Tobias knows about himself, aberrants, and his own capacity to love. But when his father orders him to assassinate a senator, one misstep unravels a knot of political intrigue that places the fate of humans and aberrants alike in Tobias's hands. As danger mounts and bodies pile deeper, will Tobias succumb to his dark nature and sacrifice Sean--or will he defy his father and rise from the ashes to become a hero in a world of villains?

Meet the Author

Adrien-Luc Sanders lives in Chicago with his husband, two cats, and enough mess for ten of each. He's a professional book editor, multicultural tribble, audiophile, cynic, occasional artist, and socially awkward mess who never sleeps, keeps trying to quit his coffee habit, still chases fireflies, and is utterly obsessed with Kowloon Walled City. Although generally your average mild-mannered reporter, he occasionally transforms into the literary version of Lewis Black. He finds his own name about as pretentious as describing himself in third person, prefers being called Adrien or Adri or that emo boy in the black nail polish.

This book has everything! Action, amazing characters, and a fasc

This book has everything! Action, amazing characters, and a fascinating story that's unique and incredibly memorable. I got into the book immediately and devoured it in one sitting, and not just because I have a soft spot for super villains. The writing is magnificent, the descriptions made me feel as though I were right there, and the fast pace always felt fun and thoroughly engaging, never rushed. This book kept me turning the pages, breathless for more. In a word... awesome.

I loved the world and most of all, the characters, and even though the synopsis seems to sum it up well, at the same time, this story is so much more than an action adventure story with a complicated anti-hero main character, and there's a lot more to Tobias than simply sociopath and killer. Tobias, wow. For someone who is supposed to be emotionless... well, you really have to read this book to understand how amazing he is. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about Tobias and watching him learn about himself. Both he and Sean found a place in my heart and I hope there's a sequel SOON because I love them both and I want to know more about their story.

The author does a phenomenal job creating complex characters that feel so real I kept thinking back to them--I love when I finish a book and feel as though I've made new friends, which is exactly what happened with FROM THE ASHES. I can't recommend this book highly enough!
