VOYA - Roxy Ekstrom
Teenagers frequently feel as if they are on the outside looking in at life. The authors of this group of fifteen stories, written especially for Latter-day Saints teens, were challenged "to write an interesting, honest short story that was uplifting without being preachy"-and they succeeded. Young adult topics with wide appeal abound, including bulimia, strict parents, independence, divorce, and teenage marriage. There is a good mix in this collection: eight stories feature boys, seven focus on girls. The stories are divided into four categories: fathers, relationships, testimony, and decisions. Several well-known authors lend their voices. Ann Edwards Cannon introduces Brenda, who has the misfortune of growing up next to the perfect Allison, with her perfect LDS family. Brenda's dad is not a member of the Church; how can he give her a blessing when she needs it most? In A Pencil Named Bob, Lael Littke explores the pain of desertion that cannot be quieted, no matter how many stories one makes up. Jonathan Nelson, talented basketball player, wonders how his life would be different if only he had listened to Coach Schmidt in A. P. Bowen's Basketball Blues. The authors have created believable, ordinary, not world-wise or gritty teens who happen to be Latter-day Saints. Their actions and reactions are true to their beliefs. Although the subtitle limits the audience, there is much here for non-LDS teens as well. VOYA Codes: 4Q 2P M J S (Better than most, marred only by occasional lapses, For the YA with a special interest in the subject, Middle School-defined as grades 6 to 8, Junior High-defined as grades 7 to 9 and Senior High-defined as grades 10 to 12).
