All resources mentioned here are covered in more detail later in the book and obviously not every resource in the book has made it to this section. China has so many rich and varied shopping, dining, and sightseeing opportunities, it's pretty hard to come up with a single best of anything. Best is a very subjective thing. Each choice here is based on a weighted combination of location, value, and energy. I know I'm sounding Zen-like on this one, but it's important to me that you get the right feel in your few free moments. Believe it or not, there isn't that much crossover in merchandise in the cities that are covered in this text.
The 10 Best Stores
Along with my list comes the usual disclaimer these choices are based on my research visits. China is changing fast. As soon as we go to press, a bigger or better resource might pop up. Cope.
Yue Hwa Chinese Products Emporium, Hong Kong 301-309 Nathan Rd. (MTR: Jordan Rd.).
A real Chinese department store, complete with grocery store in the basement I never found a store like this one in mainland China, although I supposed there would be scads of them. Buy every possible gift or souvenir, and don't forget the lower level for the seal-penis wine or the booze with snakes in it.
