My husband and I typically rely on Frommers' guides when going away on vacation. We appreciate the reviewers' honest evaluations of hotels, restaurants, and sites, which is why we often buy their guides over their leading competitors'. However, we were disappointed when we tried to use our Frommers' Florida 2003 guide on our trip to the Palm Beach area 2 weeks ago. For starters, the book didn't provide any information at all on Singer Island, where we stayed. The island is certainly popular enough to warrant its own subsection. Information was also incorrect or outdated. For instance, we tried to find one recommended restaurant in Palm Beach, only to discover it had disappeared. In following travel directions to another recommended restaurant, we dicovered that the highway exit number listed had since been changed. We also tried to visit an outlet mall in West Palm Beach that the reviewer praised as being one of the most elegant s/he had ever seen. In the end, though, we wound up going on a wild goose chase to find it and finally resorted to asking directions from a resident nearby the supposed location of the mall. She pointed to the humble-looking pink structure bearing the correct address and asked, 'You mean that thing? I don't know if it has outlets but it might have a food court.' 'That thing' turned out to be closed on Mondays, though the Frommer's guide didn't say so. Perhaps the remainder of Florida that we didn't visit is more accurately and thoroughly reviewed in the rest of the book. Unfortunately, as far as the Palm Beach area is concerned, the competition's guide book to Florida would definitely be the better choice.
