Meet the Author

About the Author Bill Goodwin was an award-winning newspaper reporter before becoming a legal counsel and speech writer for two U.S. senators, Sam Nunn of Georgia and the late Sam Ervin of North Carolina. In 1977 he sailed a 41-foot yacht from Annapolis, Maryland, to Tahiti; he then spent a year exploring French Polynesia and the rest of the South Pacific. He is now based in northern Virginia but returns to paradise as often as possible. He also is the author of Frommer's Virginia, co-author of Frommer's Florida and Frommer's Florida from $50 a Day, and editor of Frommer's USA. In addition, he served as regional editor for the first edition of Frommer's America on Wheels Mid-Atlantic.

    I wrote this book.

My name is Bill Goodwin, and I wrote the first edition of Frommer's South Pacific in 1987 and have regularly kept it up-to-date ever since. I visit Tahiti, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, and the Cook Islands to do my research on site, not from brochures, other guidebooks, or the Web. I actually go to the hotels, restaurants, and attractions in every price range to check them out before writing about them. Not only do I give you precise prices and other facts such as current web addresses, I tell you what the properties are like, how they compare to each other, and what I think of them. By the way, the seventh edition of Frommer's South Pacific was published in March 2000. It's much more up-to-date than the sixth (1998) edition, so check it out.
