Okay, I read the book cover to cover, but before reading the book I took the state's sample test. On the state's sample test I scored about a 68% not knowing much about the field, from an elementary teacher's standpoint only. The next thing that I did was read each competency in this book and then answered the practice test questions that pertained to that competency. 85% of the time I was getting the answers correct. At the end of going through all the competencies and test questions I took the entire test again, about 30 days after beginning the book. Retention on my part was not good as I only got about 70% correct. At this time I also retook the state's sample test and didn't do much better than the first time. Hey, I passed the REAL exam! What's good about the book- It covers all 25 competencies. It gives you the understanding of the competencies. Sometimes I was also cross referencing with the internet for more information. What's bad about the book- The sample questions were not very similar to the state exam. On the state exam there were about 10-15 questions that were similar/helped me. I would recommend the book because it describes the competencies and gives you some insight as to the direction of where to focus. Another note...questions on the state exam included many that were geared to middle and high school grades.
While the organization of the text is very easy to navigate, the practice test that it contains is far short of the actual state certification test. It contains explanations of why each answer is the correct answer, so this is helpful to learn why you got the question wrong. However, the test questions are not formulated like those typically on the state test. The state test is more situational-based questions and there are few of those on this book's practice test. You are better off buying the test information guide practice packet that the state offers in addition to buying this book. I would not rely on this book alone.
