Sus libros han sido traducidos al francés, italiano, alemán, danés, mandarín, griego, portugués, hebreo, coreano, holandés, polaco, rumano, serbio y húngaro. Ha ganado el Premio a la Mejor Novela Extranjera Publicada en España otorgado por la Comunidad de Galicia con Los últimos de La Prensa en 1996 y el Premio Herralde con La noche es virgen en 1997. Además ha sido finalista del Premio Planeta con Y de repente, un ángel en 2005. Roberto Bolaño escribió en la revista española Lateral de mayo de 1999: «El oído más portentoso de la nueva narrativa en español. Qué alivio leer a alguien que tiene la voluntad narrativa de no esquivar casi nada. No dudaría en calificar la prosa de Bayly de luminosa».
