Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carlee Hallman
Kara is an African-American girl with a big smile. She eats a good breakfast, has an afternoon snack of apple slices and almonds, a small piece of cake with dinner, and a bedtime snack of yogurt and whole-wheat toast. Kara tries to eat right based on the food pyramid. Her dad makes a dinner of fish, potatoes, carrots, and broccoli, and Kara has a glass of milk. At a friend's house, Kara asks for water instead of soda. Two simple sentences appear per two-page spread. Framed notes within the pictures give further information, such as: "It is always best to drink water instead of soda. Make sure to drink plenty of water every day." The brightly-colored, cheerful ink-and-watercolor illustrations show Kara in normal childhood settings. This is part of the "How to be Healthy!" series. A list of other books, a web site address, and a short index are included. Reviewer: Carlee Hallman

Amanda Doering Tourville is the author of more than 15 books for children. Her book Rain Forest ABC: An Alphabet Book (Capstone Press, 2004) was nominated for the 2005-2006 Mocking Bird Award. The same book was also on the American Library Association's booklist of Outstanding Science Read-Alouds.

Amanda currently lives in St. Paul, Minnesota, with her husband and her chinchilla. She loves animals and would have an entire zoo if she could. She also enjoys traveling and photographing wonderful, exotic places. Her photography has been featured in books and magazines.

Ronnie Rooney is a native of Massachusetts and has a great affinity for the sight, sound, and smell of the Atlantic Ocean. Though she currently resides in sunny Georgia, she hopes to settler in her beloved New England after traveling overseas. Ronnie was recently married and quickly added Roxie, a pound-puppy, to her new family. Ronnie has dedicated herself to creating art since she was a very young girl and she has no plans to slow down.

Growing up in a small town with no cable (and parents who were teachers), reading was the only thing to do. Since then, Christianne Jones has read about a bazillion books and written more than 50. Christianne works as an editor and lives in Minnesota with her husband and three daughters.
