Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Raina Sedore
Sports stories are full of lessons about athletes confronting competition more skilled than they are and learning about teamwork. This short graphic novel is no exception. Dash is a hotshot basketball player who is about to learn that he is not actually the best player to ever wear a jersey. Spare text and brightly colored illustrations in a jagged, manga-like style tell the familiar story one more time. It is told from Dash's perspective, making heavy use of captions. In keeping with its role as part of the "Sports Illustrated Kids Graphic Novels" series, this volume is packaged like a magazine, with catchy section headings like "Sports Zone Postgame Recap" and "Feature Presentation." The content is designed to attract upper elementary and middle school readers, but the reading level is low, making this an ideal "high-low" title for middle grade reluctant readers. There is little new here, but the attractive packaging and simple format will find an audience among sports fans, and thus a place in many libraries. Reviewer: Raina Sedore
