Overview

Is there any greater thrill than staring down your opponent across the poker table, waiting for the card that will make or break your hand? Acclaimed YA novelist Pete Hautman would know—he’s been a poker fanatic for thirty years. And with poker now an international TV phenomenon, the time seems right for an anthology about this most exciting game.

From a contest that pits a hapless teen against his girlfriend’s redneck family, to a midnight game with the Devil, to an Internet poker scheme gone horribly wrong, the stories here brilliantly reveal how poker can both irrevocably affect and eerily imitate teenage life.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Ten “top-notch” young adult writers have each contributed to this collection of short stories whose central setting is the game of Poker. The schizophrenic nature of the game with its highs and lows both in numbers and emotions is the perfect setting for the tumultuous happenings of the teenage years. Poker has risen in popularity among teens as well as in the general population due to its high stakes exposure on television. The stories are fun to read, whether they are dealing with the opposite sex, future ambitions, fragile egos, family, or poker. They are appealing to both sexes whether one plays poker or not. The old adage, “it’s not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game” applies here in more ways than one. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger, Ph.D.
VOYA - Kevin Beach
Popular young adult author Hautman compiles ten short stories that involve the common theme of high-stakes poker. Some stories are written by well-known authors, including Francine Pascal, who contributes Positively Cheat Street. Alex Flinn writes The Cards That Are Hidden, in which Britt learns poker to help evict her mother's gambling boyfriend. K. L. Going offers Poker for the Complete Idiot, in which Frankie wins the game but loses the girl. They range from the comedic to the dramatic and to the fantastic, with computers, ghosts, and even the devil getting mention. The characters are diverse, with black and white, male and female leads. Most of the stories are engaging and include some clever plot twists. Perhaps this reviewer is nanve, but it is difficult to believe that middle school and high school teens are playing such high-stakes poker games as described here. Some readers could object to strong language, and a few stories describe strategies and use jargon that neophytes or non-players might find confusing without the helpful glossary of poker terms at the beginning of the book. Considering the growing number of Texas Hold 'em tournaments now appearing on TV, this compilation is a good idea. The editor is a poker enthusiast and adds a certain passion to the collection. Overall the writing is average with some stilted dialogue and unrealistic situations, but young readers might embrace the subject matter and learn a life lesson about the hazards of addictive gambling. Adding brief biographies of the contributors before each story is a nice touch.
School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up
Popular young adult authors, including Alex Flinn, K. L. Going, and Walter Sorrells, contributed to this fast-paced compilation of stories about teenage encounters with poker. The characters find themselves in high-stakes situations: playing with the Devil, competing in a scholarship game, fighting to defeat a deadbeat stepdad, and staying one step ahead of an Internet poker company. The authors depict a variety of endings from the thrill of winning newfound respect to the consequences of losing a girlfriend. At the same time, each story interweaves the elements of both strategy and luck as the players compete in what is ultimately a game of chance. The stories vary from the eerily realistic to amusingly far-fetched. In all cases, teen poker players will recognize themselves and their opponents in this diverse collection. A glossary and brief description of the poker hands will help readers who are new to the game. However, some stories are so saturated with jargon that only experienced players will be able to appreciate the pace and tension in them. The popularity of the game among teens will make this collection a surefire hit with its many fans. Suggest it to teens who have enjoyed Hautman's other poker novels such as All-In (2007) and The Prop (2006, both S & S).
