Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Tracy E. Hopkins
Brandy fans, say goodbye to the giddy, goody-two-shoes teen star of Moesha and Cinderella, and say hello to the sexier and more mature young woman she's become in the past three years. Perhaps the 23-year-old's growth spurt can be attributed to her hush-hush marriage to Robert Smith, one of Full Moon's producers -- to whom she dedicates several songs, most notably the heartfelt ballad "He Is." Wherever Brandy's drawing her inspiration from, she's never sounded better. Credit her vocal development to her recurring collaboration with hit maker Rodney Jerkins (Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson), who puts his stamp on the standout tracks "I Thought," with its off-kilter beats and Jackson-worthy harmonies, and the orchestral mid-tempo track, "It's Not Worth It," where Brandy sings in a higher vocal register than usual. In the S&M-lite video for the Jerkins-laced lead single "What About Us?," a braidless, leather-and-latex-clad Brandy stands atop a computer-generated hill of muscle-bound men and chastises a former lover with quips like: "Your words have no weight with me/'Cause you're counterfeit I see." But there's nothing fake about this new and improved Brandy. No longer trying to emulate dimming starlet Houston, with Full Moon this junior diva is poised to outshine and outlast her idol.
