Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 2-5-- Paulsen takes a look at the art of hot air ballooning, from getting off the ground to touching down on terra firma. His entertaining commentary combines fact and dry wit to capture the joy and excitement of a ride. However, his perspective and humor are decidely adult in tone. Originally published as Launching, Floating High, and Landing--If Your Pilot Light Doesn't Go Out (Raintree, 1979; o.p.), this edition adds Heltshe's beautiful full-color photographs that highlight the sport from the ground and the air, many showing balloonists at invitational events around the world. Unfortunately, the text and illustrations just don't go together. Children will definitely be attracted to the appealing photos and older readers may chuckle at the deadpan presentation, but taken together, this picture book doesn't fly. --Cassie Whetstone, Keyser High School, WV

The excitement and wonder of flying above the ground in a hot-air balloon have an instant allure for many kids (and adults as well). Paulsen's tongue-in-cheek description of the experience, from takeoff (not without challenges) to the ride and the landing, will engross readers. Although the text was originally published by Raintree in 1979, Paulsen's delicious sense of humor is still timely and brings easy smiles: "If you go truly high--above the clouds--it's probably best not to open your eyes. Just sit in the basket and wait. No matter what they say." Spectacular color photography has been added in this edition; photos on every page, taken from varying perspectives, will appeal to readers and browsers of varying ages. Teachers and librarians looking for high interest-low reading materials will appreciate this book. It will also prove useful as a take off for a writing activity.
