From Barnes & Noble
Dabbling in alchemy carries a price. When brothers Edward and Alphonse played with the mystical power to alter the natural world, they both paid dearly. One lost an arm and a leg; the other became a soul locked into a body of living iron. Now these siblings are slaves of the evil military-alchemical complex, using their unique powers for dire purposes. Fullmetal Alchemist combines powerful graphics with a strong original story line.
Publishers Weekly
This manga inspired the popular series now airing on the Cartoon Network and captures the show's brand of mystical, action-packed adventure. Set in a steam-powered locale that isn't necessarily in our world, the series follows two teenage brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric-one bearing two cybernetic replacement limbs while the other's soul animates a cumbersome suit of armor. The two are government agents wielding prodigious abilities in alchemy who carry out the hazardous assignments issued by their handlers. Their exploits range from thwarting the machinations of a fraudulent and ambitious priest who abuses the faith of his oblivious flock to cunningly extracting an impoverished mining community from the exorbitant clutches of a corrupt official and dealing with a train-hijack situation that owes a serious debt to the film Under Siege. In a market glutted with too many like-minded efforts, Arakawa's work grabs readers and shakes them with simple yet eloquent visuals and a bizarre concept. To give away more would ruin the story, but the snippets of the brothers' origin hint at much darker things to come, and such portents herald fun in upcoming installments. Library Journal
In this series' science-fantasy world, alchemy's rule of "equivalent exchange" states that for something to be created, something of equal value must be sacrificed. When the prodigiously talented young alchemists Edward and Alphonse Elric attempted a forbidden alchemical procedure to resurrect their mother, the results were disastrous. Not only did they fail, but Edward lost an arm and a leg and Alphonse's soul was trapped inside a suit of armor. Now Edward, with cybernetic replacement limbs, is a State Alchemist working for the military government, traveling with his brother in search of the Philosopher's Stone that may be able to help them become whole again. Along the way, they find themselves fighting corrupt leaders and righting wrongs. The anime TV show based on this manga, shown on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, has made quite a splash among fans. The more formative manga is, so far, less emotionally compelling than the anime, and closer to a typical shonen (boys') quest adventure story, with cartoony artwork and exaggerated action scenes to match. But both versions are entertaining, with moments of comedy among the fights and the drama, and the manga is recommended for teens and adults. Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

    I Also Recommend:

FullMetal Alchemist is a manga with style, and class.

Hey, it's BATTOSAI with another review, FullMetal Alchemist is a great manga but it's not for everyone, see why in my review of,
    FullMetal Alchemist volume 1
Personal score 9.7 out of 10
    Age rating 14+
    Genre shonen(boy/men), action/adventure, drama.
The story to FMA is probably one of the greatest to grace the pages of manga history' two young brothers learned the ways of alchemy, and attempted a "human transmutation"
(Taboo in alchemical law), to try and revive there dead mother, they ultimately fail resulting in Edward Elric (the older brother) to lose his right arm and left leg, and his younger brother Alphonse to become a soul in a suit of armor.
There's not much to the story in this volume, just a collection of mini stories, and it starts off in an odd spot but you'll get it fairly soon.
The extra stuff in the back is a classic staple for manga, and FMA has some good ones back there.
The characters are really interesting, each with his or her own crosses to bear, and deep personalities.
Now remember when I said "it isn't for everyone", well this is why, it deals a little in religion and politics, some might even go as far to say that alchemy is a form of witchcraft, well the thing is it's fictional, nothing but a work of the imagination, if you really want to make a stink about it go ahead, but remember people, it's a book, nothing more, nothing less, so if your sensitive to that stuff this manga isn't for you.
The artwork is good and makes leaps and bounds in later volumes; it's an interesting combination of thick lines and sharp edges that make for a gritty, dramatic experience.
Manga to anime, read the manga, the anime is so far off the original story it will confuse you when reading the manga.
I hope this review was helpful, and I plan on reviewing more FMA, so until then, good reading.

    two brothers

Fullmetal Alchemist may be one of the best books you'll ever read. it has everthing you could ask for, action, adventure, magic, comedy, romance, horror, everything. if you have seen the anime, forget everything about it. The manga is totality differnt. Something is always happening to keep you on your toes, and every chapter is important. its about two brothers that learned alchemy(a science like magic) at a young age. thier father left them a time ago and thier mother died. Having no one to take care of them and for the love of thier mother, they try to bring her back to life using alchemy. But failure wasnt the only bad thing that could happen, the younger brother Alphonse loses his entire body, he is only a soul now controlling a suit of armor. and Edward the older brother loses his left leg and then trades his right arm for his brother's soul that he transmutes to armor. The brothers will never try to bring thier mother back again but they burn they're house and leave town for edward to become a state alchemist and find a answer to getting thier original bodies back. but what thier looking for is very dangerous.

    forget magic, venture into alchemy!

Join two brothers as they attempt to fix a mistake that almost cost them their lives. Learn what it means to be human, what it really is to sin, what it means to pay an equivalent price for everything you want, and how milk is the source of all evil. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and the every plot twist will have you griping the edge of your seat. Go ahead and buy the whole series at once and be done with it, because once you start you will not want to stop. And if you think that just because you saw the anime you automatically know how it ends, you are in for one BIG surprise, because the manga is entirely different, and IT'S BETTER.

    2 Words... READ IT!

I used to be a big Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z fan, now this anime/manga replaces it by far i'm glad one of my friends told me about it or i would never have picked this off the shelf. It has an awesome plot, and it makes you want to read more. It had a good ending in volume 27 :). WAY better than the anime by far, even though Hiromu made brotherhood which is pretty much the manga but with little more scenes. Those of you who love adventure, action, romance, or anything like that, i recommend this book, because i bet you wont put it down. :)

    Pure love!

I fell in love with Fullmetal Alchemist when I saw the first anime. After moving on to the manga, knowing that they were different, I couldn't believe how much better it was! The plot is so intriguing and the characters so amazing! I loved following the Elric brothers throughout their journey and to their eventual and deserved resolution.

    Very good

The first in the series that introduces the brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric. And what had happened to them before Ed became the full metal alchemist and Al in a suit of armor. This got a little dark, sad but still a very good read. Recommend this and the anime.

I wish i would have picked this series up sooner!!!

Fullmetal Alchemist is one of the best mangas I have read besides Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Monster, 20th Century Boys, and Pluto. It is very well drawn and the story is very well written. The story is also original compared to some anime and manga series that are out there. I will defiantly still keep collecting this series because it deserves a place in my collection, and I would also recommend it to any anime lover or someone who just wants a good graphic novel to read.

ok i love full metal alchemist but this first book was kinda boring so whatever you do dont stop at the first one. as the story goes on the series is amazing. its also confusing so just keep reading. this manga has every thing such as funny, action, thrills, characters, etc. this is my second favorite anime/manga (followed by gantz look into it). Don't stop reading tell you get to four and if you still dont like it this may not be the manga for you.

I love this series, the story line really flows. It's easy to understand whats going on and thought provoking at the same time. If you're new to manga, start here. If you aren't, then why haven't you read it yet? If you have only seen the TV series, don't think it's the same thing because it's not. The manga series is WAY better with an entirely different plot line. I would really, really, recommend that people start reading this series.

    FullMetal Alchemist Begins

FullMetal Alchemist is about the two Elric brothers who are alchemists, master of creation. Edward, the FullMetal Alchemist, and Alphonse the Invincible Alchemist, go on adventures to regain their bodies back from the philospher's stone. The story is well written and strings together humor and action. Well lovable characters, and a great concept that draws you in. The story, though great, felt rushed chapters would end so fast where alot could of been expanded on. Three stories are put into this book, where as the first story could easily spawn the whole volume maybe even the some of the second one. I recommend this book although it has its flaws this book is recommended to anyone that wants try soemthing new.
