Children's Literature - Kristy Lyn Sutorius
"If it's not broken, don't fix it" must be Hillert's motto when it comes to children's books. Her "Beginning-to-Read" series has been around for more than 40 years, and she is still churning out ideas. In this latest title, Hillert and her illustrator, Joe Rogers, depict kids enjoying a year's worth of holidays, seasons and other special days. The rhyming pattern varies and certain stanzas work better than others. "Come on. Come on. To see the fun. Come on. Come on now. Run, run, run," does not quite capture Memorial Day, even with Rogers depicting children running off to a parade. Despite the occasional disconnect between the text and illustrations, readers won't skip a beat. A birthday party, a summer afternoon at the beach, and a Valentine exchange are just a few of the experiences the boisterous bunch of characters has throughout the course of a year. Roger's kids could do with a jolt of modern fashion, leaving behind their track jackets and high-waisted harvest-gold pants for lower-rise denim and Heelys. Readers and parents will find a list of words in alphabetical order in the back along with a recommendation to transfer them to flash cards. Perfect for the sight-readers and rhymers alike, this survey of the holidays and special parts of a calendar year will have them cheering for the next celebration. Reviewer: Kristy Lyn Sutorius
