This edition includes an ebook for instructors that includes lecture videos, PowerPoint presentations, and test items. The previous edition was published in 2010.
Purpose: The author's purpose is to provide "a comprehensive approach to designing behavioral interventions for children in homes and residential facilities, students in special and general education settings, and adults residing in inpatient units and facilities." The online resources are invaluable for teachers.
Audience: The book is intended for "courses in (applied) behavioral analysis, behavioral or emotional assessment or management, child psychopathology, or developmental disabilities taught in school psychology, special education, behavioral analysis, psychology, or social work." The author is a licensed psychologist in California.
Features: The book begins with the basic concepts of applied behavioral analysis. In this approach, behavior is seen as functional within certain contexts due to existing contingencies. The author gives examples of positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, direct access, socially mediated access, direct escape, and socially mediated escape. Behavior change is possible as the therapist is aware of the establishing operation. It is important to conduct a functional behavioral assessment of the problem behavior. First, the need for intervention has to be clearly defined. Second, there must be a baseline measurement of the problem behavior(s). A functional behavioral analysis is then generated with various hypotheses. The author has developed a behavioral classification system, which is composed of four major categories: direct access, socially mediated access, direct escape, and socially mediated escape. A basic principle is to diagnose behaviors, not clients. There are a variety of function-derived treatment options. The goal is to decrease unacceptable behaviors and increase desirable behaviors (or replacement behaviors). Once these behaviors are identified, functional behavioral treatment protocols are designed. The book has two appendixes, helpful case examples, tables, discussion questions, and forms.
Assessment: This is an excellent book with practical information and enlightening case examples that can be applied in many different settings. It should be in the library of anyone who wants to know how to address the problematic behavior of children. This update is justified based on the significant changes in this edition, including the lists of chapter objectives, narrated lectures, and text-embedded assignments, simulation exercises, discussions, and instructor resources.
