Description: This book represents a new collaboration of experts from multiple disciplines, including those with backgrounds in human or animal-based studies and those skilled in research or clinical practice, to provide this comprehensive resource on toxicological neuropathology.
Purpose: The goal is to provide a complete reference on the design and interpretation of studies involving toxicological neuropathology from experienced veterans. This is a most laudable objective, and the book excels in meeting it.
Audience: The intended audience consists of pathologists, toxicologists, and other scientists who investigate neurotoxicity. In addition, all others interested in animal neuropathology, even without a neurotoxicity focus per se, such as human or animal neurodegenerative based researchers, will find this a valuable go-to reference. The editors have assembled a superb cast of contributors with an extensive breadth of hands-on experience.
Features: The book is divided into four major sections: fundamentals of neurobiology, methodology of toxicological neuropathology, current practices in toxicological neuropathology, and applied toxicological neuropathology. Insights and pearls of wisdom from both human and animal practices are offered by well-known, highly skilled experts. Even fine details of the elements of neuropathology reporting are covered in depth. Chapters are devoted to specialized tissues such as the retina, ear, and olfactory system. Detailed, practical tips on the processing of brain, muscle, and peripheral nerve tissue are provided. Behavioral models, approach to cognitive assessments, and aging changes are also discussed. Specialized techniques and histological markers used in assessing neurotoxicity are covered, with an emphasis on the recognition of artifacts. Details on stereological analyses and in vivo imaging as well as many more techniques are included. The pictures are of high quality, and color versions of a subset of the figures are accessible online. A richly detailed appendix references books and the web.
Assessment: This exceptional, high quality book will greatly benefit its intended audience. It is hoped it will also find its way into the libraries of researchers who are not yet aware that they need this book (but do). Although Veterinary Neuropathology, Summers et al. (Mosby, 1995) remains an outstanding, first-rate reference for its audience, this new book uniquely blends experts from both veterinary and human practices and offers a wealth of practical experience from authors of diverse practice backgrounds willing to share their unique perspectives.
