Editorial Reviews

Isaac Kleinman
This the second edition of a text on aerospace medicine first published in 1986. It provides a detailed overview of the entire subject from the history of flight, through the physiology of the flight environment and the clinical practice of aviation and space medicine, to the operational aspects of flight (including accident investigation resources management) and the impact of flight and the aerospace industry on the community. Its purpose lies in the collation of these many aspects of aerospace medicine into a single volume. It is aimed at both physicians and nonphysicians interested in any of the wide range of topics that are related to this field. There are chapters that would be of interest to pilots. The chapters on the role of aviation in the transmission of disease would be of interest to epidemiologists as well as physicians. The chapters on respiratory and ENT physiology provide excellent basic science reviews of value to physicians, medical students, and residents. The sections on air crew and passenger health maintenance, disease prevention, and treatment would be of interest to practicing physicians in many areas of medicine. Administrators would find value in the chapters on operational aerospace medicine, human resources management, and human factors in aviation and space flight. This is a useful and very interesting text. My only criticism is the poor quality of the illustrations and the fact that, in many of the chapters, the references have not been brought up-to-date.
