Reviewer: Mark E .A. Escott, MD, MPH (Penn State Hershey)
Description: This book provides an excellent structure for learning to students entering the field of emergency medical services. The clear illustrations are an excellent guide for the development of new skills and the case-based approach of each chapter makes the learning process more dynamic.
Purpose: The primary purpose is to provide a format for EMS education that will develop life-long learners. This goal is well accepted in medical education and is an essential part of EMS education as well. The book begins by presenting cases at the beginning of each chapter. There is apparently some online material to bolster this problem-based approach, but I did not have access to it. It is impossible for a book to substitute for an entire course design, but this would make an excellent companion for an EMT course using a problem-based learning approach.
Audience: Introductory EMS students are the intended audience, and the book is appropriately formatted for them.
Features: The book covers the standard information needed to complete the EMT curriculum, and the historical perspectives and the "Street Smart" sections are nice touches. There is a constant battle in EMS education between what a book teaches and what happens in real-life. The problem-based learning format and the pictures for procedures are particularly good. I would have liked to have been able to access the online content to evaluate those resources. The future of EMS education is augmented with online discussion and resources.
Assessment: This book provides readers with the resources they need to develop as EMTs, while laying the groundwork for life-long education with the problem-based learning format. It is a high quality resource that I would recommend to my EMS educators.
