Overview

Comparative effectiveness research - the conduct and synthesis of systematic research in order to compare the benefits and harms of alternative treatment options - is of critical importance in enabling informed health care decisions to be made. This user- friendly, practical handbook examines in depth how best to perform such comparative effectiveness research. A wide range of topics and methods are discussed, including research synthesis, sampling analysis, assessment of evidence design, systematic evaluation of statistical analysis, and meta-analysis. The discussion extends well beyond the fundamentals by encompassing "complex" systematic reviews, "cumulative" meta-analyses, and logic-based versus utility-based decision making. Health care providers, researchers, instructors, and students will all find this to be an invaluable reference on the compelling current issues and important analytical tools in comparative effectiveness research.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Bhavesh Barad, MD (East Tennessee State University Quillen College of Medicine)
Description: This is a single-author reference on evidence-based practice and translational science by a well-recognized author in the field.
Purpose: The book details the tools required for comparative effectiveness research, as well as the methods particularly useful for systematic evaluation of statistical analysis and meta-analysis.
Audience: The intended audience includes clinical investigators, medical practitioners, and students and teachers in medical sciences (especially dentistry), clinical/basic research, statistics, epidemiology, and biostatistics.
Features: The initial part focuses on explaining evidence-based decision making and covers research synthesis characteristics and their usefulness with systematic review and meta-analysis. The second part explains in detail various tools of evidence-based research, with a comprehensive discussion of data analysis, power, inferences, and validity or prediction. The book is written in a way to make the subject easier to understand. Chapters explain concepts in a logical fashion, with step-by-step analysis as well as examples and schematics. A brief summary begins each chapter to highlight core concepts. Both the theory and step-by-step analysis of each concept are explained with examples to benefit even nonclinical and nonresearch readers. The additional references at the end provide a thorough database for additional learning.
Assessment: This book is excellent. It is a valuable resource for gaining a basic understanding of evidence-based research and translational science and its practical application that can be used as a reference by students and teachers of epidemiology, statistics, and biostatistics, as well as medical science and clinical investigators.
