Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Bennett S. Greenspan, MD, MS (Medical College of Georgia)
Description: This book presents a concise and easily understandable approach to the use of high-resolution lung CT (HRCT) in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of diffuse lung disease.
Purpose: It provides a practical and useful set of observations, insights, principles, and differential diagnoses so that readers can thoughtfully use these techniques in their practice, meeting these worthwhile objectives.
Audience: The book is written for those in the daily practice of interpreting high-resolution CT in diffuse lung disease. It seems to me that it would be a useful reference to radiologists in practice as well as residents in radiology. It also would be useful for trainees in chest fellowships.
Features: The first chapter discusses techniques, radiation dose, and normal anatomy, while the remainder of the first section (chapters 2-5) is devoted to various findings on HRCT studies. Section 2 (chapters 6-18) covers specific diseases. These are discussed in chapters devoted to specific processes, such as airways disease, interstitial pneumonias, pulmonary infections, pneumoconioses, etc. This book provides substantial information in a very concise but readable and understandable format. The material is well covered, and the images are excellent. There is one shortcoming — most of the references are over 10 years old.
Assessment: While not intended to be a comprehensive atlas, this book provides substantial information in a concise but readable and understandable format. It provides a wealth of information and is an excellent reference for those interpreting these studies, particularly for those wishing to become proficient in this area.
