More About This Textbook
Overview
This is the first half of a set of lecture notes with exercises - a text - for two semester course in mathematical statistics at the senior/graduate level for those who need a strong background in statistics as an essential tool in their career. To study this text, the reader needs a thorough familiarity with calculus including such things as Jacobians and series but somewhat less intense familiarity with matrices including quadratic forms and eigenvalues. For convenience, these lecture notes were divided into two parts: Volume I, Probability for Statistics, for the first semester, and Volume II, Statistical Inference, for the second.
Editorial Reviews
Booknews
The authors (associated with the Department of Mathematical Sciences at New Mexico State University) have produced a two-volume text intended to keep serious advanced undergraduates busy for an academic year. Unusual mainly in that the text has been organized into "50-minute Lessons" (of which some, marked *, are "interesting but not necessary"). Volume I treats "Elementary probability and statistics" (21 lessons), "Probability and expectation" (13 lessons), "Limiting distributions" (15 lessons); Volume II treats "Sampling and distributions" (11 lessons), "Statistical estimation" (14 lessons), "Testing hypotheses" (12 lessons) and some "Special topics" (11 lessons). The typed equations are not particularly easy to read, the typewriter-generated figures even more unsightly. Exercises, occasional references. (NW) Annotation c.
