Purpose: The purpose is to introduce concepts and skills of contemporary professional nursing to nursing students to enable them to meet the demands of an ever-changing healthcare system. These objectives are essential for nursing students. They provide a framework on which to build throughout the nursing curriculum. The editors meet the objectives very well.
Audience: The textbook is written for the entry level nursing student. The editors and contributors are credible authorities for content presented.
Features: Basic nursing concepts and nursing skills necessary for entry level nursing students to build upon in their nursing education are covered. Learning objectives are provided and each chapter ends with a summary of highlights and a list of selected readings to complement the chapter. References for each chapter are also provided. Each chapter has a highlighted box focusing on a critical thinking activity. Color pictures and illustrations are appropriate and well-presented. Specific nursing skills are clearly outlined in a step-by-step format with illustrations for added clarity. The glossary, appendix, and index are easily accessible and useful tools for student learning.
Assessment: The editors of this textbook do a very good job of presenting introductory nursing concepts and nursing skills. Each chapter is well-organized with learning objectives and chapter highlights to help the student focus on important material. Illustrations are extremely helpful, especially with the nursing skills. The basic nursing skills are presented in a step-by-step format and are easy to follow. This book is comprehensive and well-organized; it is an excellent fundamentals text.
