This basic nursing fundamentals text is intended for the beginning nursing student. The authors present a holistic concept that will encourage the reader to view the individual as a whole, rather than a fragmentation of different concepts. The book is divided into a number of different areas that include the individual and healthcare, the delivery of healthcare, the therapeutic nature of nursing, the nursing process, and the nurse-client relationship in specialized situations. The purpose is to initiate beginning nursing students into the profession by exposing them to the concept of holistic care; that is, caring for the client as a whole entity, not as a series of different systems and diseases. The authors do an excellent job of considering the various aspects of holistic are, including issues such as spirituality and sexuality. This book is intended for the beginning nursing student. The beginning nursing student is presented with a good foundation of the important fundamentals of nursing. Special features include exercises to enhance critical thinking skills, encourage research skills, and highlight the nursing process. This book also has a large number of full-page nursing care plans, procedure skills, and illustrations. The procedures include a step-by-step process of basic clinical skills, written in easy-to-understand language. I found this book to be a thorough, clear, and accurate text for the beginning nursing student. The addition of areas such as the nursing process, critical thinking skills, and the procedures listed enhance the reader's understanding of basic nursing skills. It is comparable to other texts that are widely used for nursing fundamentals. Becauseof the inclusion of the holistic concept, I would highly recommend this text to nursing programs that encourage viewing the client as a whole.

Meet the Author

Sue C. DeLaune is currently the Education Director of S DeLaune Consulting, an independent continuing education business in Mandeville, Louisiana. She is also Assistance Professor of Nursing at William Carey University, New Orleans, Louisiana, where she provides didactic and clinical instruction to students in fundamentals of nursing. Ms. DeLaune has taught nursing in diploma, associate degree and baccalaureate schools of nursing, as well as in RN-degree completion programs. With over thirty five years experience as a clinician, administrator and educator, she has taught fundamentals of nursing, psychiatric/mental health nursing, nursing leadership and research, professionalism, issues and trends and nursing ethics courses. She also presents seminars and workshops that help nurses to maintain competency in the areas of communication, leadership and teambuilding skills, client education, and stress management. Ms. DeLaune is the author of several other books, including CLINICALCONFERENCES AS TEACHING STRATEGIES, ANXIETY AND DISSOCIATIVE DISORDERS, PERSONALITY DISORDERS, VIOLENCE IN PSYCHIATRIC SETTINGS AND SOMATOFORM AND SLEEP DISORDERS. Ms. Delaune holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing Degree from Northwestern State University, Natchitoches, Louisiana and a Masters Degree in Nursing from Louisiana State University Medical Center, New Orleans, Louisiana. Patricia K. Ladner, after retiring from forty years of nursing in 2005, has served as the Volunteer Coordinator for three Catholic Churches in DeLisle, Mississippi, Katrina Recovery. Following Katrina, she has presented numerous workshops on Infection Control and Dealing with Loss, as well as coordinating the activities of volunteers from many states. She is a former Consultant for Nursing Practice in the Louisiana State Board of Nursing and has taught nursing in diploma and associate degree schools of nursing prior to her retirement. Ms. Ladner has been recognized as one of the Great 100 Nurses by the New Orleans District Nurses Association and is a 2009 Caring Woman Honoree by the Biloxi Regional Medical Center and Cable One. Ms. Ladner holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Marillac College, St. Louis, Missouri, a Master's Degree in Counseling and Guidance from Troy State University, Troy, Alabama and a Master's Degree in Nursing from Louisiana State University Medical Center, New Orleans, Louisiana.
