Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Edward Abraham, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This is the fourth edition of a book about orthopedic-related disorders and injuries in children.
Purpose: The purpose is to present the basics of pediatric orthopedics in a general way.
Audience: The book is written primarily for primary care physicians caring for children with musculoskeletal problems. Orthopedic residents and practitioners are another audience. Lynn T. Staheli, MD, professor emeritus, University of Washington School of Medicine, and consulting orthopedist at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle, is known worldwide.
Features: The 15 chapters are heavily illustrated with photographs of x-rays and patients and color clip art. The text is brief but most relevant. A list of additional references ends each chapter. The book highlights nonsurgical management, omitting detailed surgical techniques.
Assessment: Dr. Staheli has devoted his entire professional life to the care of children with orthopedic problems. He has amassed an extensive library of clinical cases which has made the format of this book possible. It is in many ways a photographic encyclopedia of pediatric orthopedics. It has a valuable role to play in the education of primary care physicians and others in a most entertaining way. I very strongly recommend pediatricians, family practitioners, and orthopedists acquire this important work.
Steven Becker
In his preface to the first edition, the author proposed ""to make learning the basics of pediatric orthopedics a rapid and pleasant experience,"" and he succeeded admirably. The second edition has been updated and modified, with the addition of new illustrations, updated reading lists, and a completely new chapter on sports medicine. Among the recently published textbooks of orthopedic surgery, this text is unique in that it presents a broad range of information in a format that is easy to access and to understand. The broad range of information included in this text makes it especially valuable to pediatricians, family medicine physicians, primary care physicians, pediatric and orthopedic residents, and medical students. With an emphasis on fundamentals, the author has integrated information on etiology, evaluation, differential diagnosis, and treatment with clinical photographs, line art, and easy-to-read charts and graphs that give a succinct overview of information that would be laborious to follow in text form. The numerous headings and subheadings that divide each chapter make locating specific information quick and easy. From his expertise and experience, the author provides clear and pragmatic treatment recommendations for a myriad of orthopedic conditions in children. A unique aspect of this text is an emphasis on the overall well-being of the child -- physical, social, and psychological -- as a foremost consideration, and the author outlines some ""philosophical and practical"" guidelines for maintaining this primary objective. A special section at the end of the book answers frequently asked questions and even provides handouts that can be copied and offered to thefamily to help them understand their child's condition. In short, this colorful, concise text will be a valuable addition to the library of any physician who cares for children and will provide a quick overview as well as a resource for more in-depth study. The pediatric orthopedist will recommend this text to his or her colleagues as a superb reference text for ""thumb nail sketches"" of the many musculoskeletal conditions that affect children.
