Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Kirk W. Noraian, DDS, MS (University of Chicago Medical Center)
Description: This third edition uses a self-assessment format similar to the second edition (1988). The book is divided into three modules: basic skills, patient assessment, and periodontal debridement.
Purpose: The book provides "the solution to every problem encountered in teaching and learning instrumentation." This worthy objective, which the authors satisfy, allows the student, educator, and practitioner to differentiate between current and outdated concepts.
Audience: The book is written for students, educators, and practitioners of dental hygiene and dentistry. Although its primary audience is dental hygienists, the book's value to beginning dentists and dental students should not be underestimated.
Features: This esthetically pleasing book offers significant illustrations that are highly appropriate for the level of instruction it attempts to provide. The references are current, and the black-and-white illustrations and photographs are pertinent and helpful. Each section is followed by a self-test to assess a grasp of the material, which may be helpful especially to beginning students.
Assessment: The book is easy to read and may be a little too fundamental for dental students; however, this attention to detail is often overlooked as an essential part of dental education. Its appropriateness for dental hygiene programs goes without question. It has been eight years since the last edition, and some treatment modalities have changed. This new edition appears to address those changes.
