Fungus Amongus

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - David Sprague
Straddling the line between Korn-styled aggro-rock and post-Faith No More art-skronk, this affably twisted combo can give up the funk and give out the joy buzzers with equal glee -- as borne out by this disc, which offers a gleeful look back at some of the band's earliest work. Four of the songs -- including the improbably libidinous "You Will Be a Hot Dancer" -- eventually appeared on 1997's Enjoy Incubus EP, while the rest have previously only been available on Incubus's self-released debut also called Fungus Amongus, which initially appeared in a pressing of just 2,000. Although none of the songs here pack quite the proto-metal wallop of the group's recent work, guitarist Mike Einziger manages to cut quite a funky swath through loopy songs such as "Trouble in 421" and "Shaft," both of which also feature some of frontman Brandon Boyd's more off-the-wall scattings. Some might be bothered by the fact that Incubus never hid the influences they wore on their sleeves back in the day -- "Psychopsilocybin" is as unabashed a Chili Peppers' cop as you'll ever hear -- but Incubus should really be given a lot of credit for presenting this older material as it happened. No remixes, no remastering -- just a warts-and-all look at the baby pictures of a band that's grown up right.
All Music Guide - Dean Carlson
Incubus' independent debut is an unremarkable take on suburban MTV funk. While there's much to dislike, notably frontman Brandon Boyd, who growls like he wants the voice of anybody but himself, there are also a few variants to the Hi-NRG game that wouldn't be out of place with Fishbone or Primus. "Hilikus" is a funkier if more legible Rage Against the Machine, and "Shaft" works the sensible side of dancefloor metal, offering a strong collection of big noise, scratched records, and stripped and temperamental bass assaults. Though fans who arrived later will be surprised by its roughness, Fungus Amongus is a step removed from most of the empty-headed rap-metal army.
