When you think of Brazilian music, this is probably not what comes to mind. Since it began in late 2006, the Man Recordings label's Funk Mundial series has documented a string of collaborations between electro producers from around the world and baile funk MCs from the Rio area. This disc brings together 16 of those recordings in a single convenient package, one that consistently entertains even if it starts to wear just a bit by the end. This music's strong suit is the rhythmic structure: influenced by American hip-hop (especially of the '80s and '90s variety), techno, reggaeton, and Bahia styles, baile funk is a wild and crazy welter of different elements. The weak link is usually the rapping; while it's difficult for a non-Portuguese speaker to judge the wordplay, there's something about these rhythms that leads the MCs to rely on blocky and sometimes downright awkward phrasing. Even with that caveat, though, there are plenty of truly impressive moments here: eight-year-old MC Wesley acquits himself very nicely on the relentlessly funky "Subiu, Desceu," and the Rob B. mix of Stereotyp's "Jece Valadao" has a particularly nice bounce to it. The rhythmic change-up on Jesse Rose's "Toca Pra Mim" is a nice surprise, as is the dark, strange vibe of Makossa Megablast's "Late Que Eu Tô Passando." Very nice overall.
