Overview

You should be familiar with the results by now. A DJ Dan mix album seems to be any or all of the following: entertaining, anti-serious, and slow on the up-take. On the other hand, Funk the System -- DJ Dan's third mix attempt -- manages to whittle down the slow excesses of pervious efforts and create one of his most consistent releases so far. There's a more coherent theme throughout the album, for starters. Yes, it's what the title implies: lots of funky, booty-loving grooves. Soul Gabber's "Motocrass Madness" adds some big beats to the 4/4 procedures and even the theme-hugging "House of Funk" is effortlessly danceable. Everything is clearly funkier and more impressive than his last Latin-flavored house attempt. Except for one huge blunder: the over-saturated and exceedingly annoying "Needle Damage" is here. Twice. Unlike Dan's previous studio work under the Electroliners guise, this is a hyperscratchy house track whose amusing breakdown and huge breakthrough popularity still can't keep it from straying into the territory of the obnoxious. Fortunately, this gaffe can't damage the goods too much. Many of the heavy, simple beats elsewhere will have listeners often dancing harder than they have in any previous DJ Dan mix. Especially when he's not afraid to slip in even more disco grooves, electro shouts, or old-school samples amidst the funk. With such a consistent, elevating mood, Funk the System is the sound of Dan finally entering the scene. Which can only mean that he's soon poised to really shake some serious booty when he finally realizes his own arrival.
